He was known as "Kanuni", the Lawgiver, in his homeland, but for Europeans he has always been "Suleyman the Magnificent". Within the Empire Süleyman was responsible for transforming the army and the judicial system. Süleyman himself was a poet and accomplished goldsmith. Suleyman died on September 6th 1566 during the war with Austria outside Szigetvar in Hungary led by his Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, which two days later fell to the Ottomans. After Suleyman's death, he was taken back to Istanbul and was buried in the largest of Sinan's mausoleum situated within the complex of the Suleymaniye Mosque. Istanbul had a detailed city plan for reconstruction during this time. Migration was prohibited. Building houses around the city wall was prohibited. |

Sehzadebasi Mosque: It is at Sarachane across the Minicipality Palace. Suleyman the Great ordered Mimar Sinan to construct a mosque in memory of his 1543 died son, Mehmet, and construction started on 1544, had completed on 1548. Mosque, which is at the city center, is in the middle of a complex composed of theology schools, mausoleums, tabhane and imaret. The outer courtyard of the Şehzade Mosque has six gates. The double minarets of the mosque each of which has two minaret symbols, are the most interesting details of the mosque. The plain structure of other mosques and minarets is not present here. The approach of Mimar Sinan in terms of decoration in these minarets is unique.

SULEYMANIYE MOSQUE |

During this episode we will we be studying the Suleymaniye Mosque, also commonly known as the Mosque of Sultan Suleiman I. This mosque is a center piece in one of the world’s most unique cultures. Join me as we take a tour of this amazing piece of architecture and much of the background information surrounding it. As you can see in the image to the left, the Suleymaniye (Mosque highlighted in yellow) was located near the center of Istanbul, Turkey. This map was compiled and drawn by Jaspar Isac. It is an original map that was made before 1654. We do not know an exact date only because it was not clearly indicated on his work. We can say that it was before 1654 because this was the year in which he died, and therefore could not have possibly compiled it there after. It is difficult to see from this depiction of the city, but it is important to note that this mosque was built upon the hill top located in the capital city of the Ottoman Empire. This being the case, it is easy to understand that this was an important Structure. |

GRAND BAZAAR |

![]() |
The grand bazaar began construction in 1455 and opened in 1461. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by the type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. The bazaar contains two bedestens (domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The bazaar was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and in 1894 underwent a major restoration following an earthquake. Today, the grand bazaar houses two mosques, two hamams, four fountains, and multiple restaurants and cafes. The sprawling complex consists of 12 major buildings and has 22 doors. |
